Translation

[Meaning] trilling sounds and excessive plucked notes.1
The ni/glaros is a plucked note and a musical strain.2
It seems to have been coined by onomatopoeia.3

Greek original · Adler’s text

Νίγλαροι· τὰ τερετίσματα καὶ περίεργα κρούματα. κροῦμά ἐστι καὶ μέλος μουσικὸν παρακελευστικὸν ὁ νίγλαρος. ἔοικεν ὠνοματοπεποιῆσθαι.

Notes (3)

  1. LSJ s.v. ni/glaros gives 'trills, quavers' for the plural and 'whistle (the sound)' for the singular.
  2. 1Nominative plural; same gloss in Photius (nu217 Theodoridis), and very similar already in Hesychius (nu560), where Latte claims the word as quoted from Pherecrates (fr. 145.27 Kock = 155.27 K.-A.). See also tau 338. ↩
  3. 2From a scholion on Aristophanes, Acharnians 554, where the genitive plural nigla/rwn occurs (web address 1). ↩
  4. 3Adler indicates that this sentence is an interpolation. ↩
