Translation

[Meaning] in a special sense the stage [skene] of all speakers.1 The assembled frameworks upon which they fabricate images, and [sc. also] the underpinnings of wooden theaters. [sc. It would be] better to say the speaking-place, on which stood the tragedians,2 or [sc. on which] the actors, from high above the ground, used to speak.3 But some say that this an 'ass', some a 'wild ram', others a 'ladder'.4

Notes (4)

  1. The headword, already at omicron 121 (accusative plural) and omicron 122, is a masculine noun in the nominative singular; see LSJ s.v. It is probably generated by Plato, Symposium 194B (web address 1), where it occurs in the accusative singular, o)kri/banta, or from the corresponding scholion (see n. 3 below); cf. Timaeus' Platonic Lexicon 997a23.
  2. 1The headword is identically glossed in Photius' Lexicon (next note); cf. Timaeus's Platonic Lexicon 997a17. For skene see sigma 569. ↩
  3. 2To this point the Suda is identical to the entry in Photius' Lexicon (omicron186 Theodoridis), except that the latter reads i(/stantai, they stand, the finite verb thus completing the thought; cf. LSJ s.v. i(/sthmi. [In her critical apparatus Adler notes that mss AFV transmit lo/gion, oracle, and that the Dutch scholar Tiberius Hemsterhuys (1685-1766) emended the text so that e)k metew/rou followed e)/legon: used to speak from high above the ground.] ↩
  4. 3Evidently paraphrased from the scholia to Plato, Symposium 194B (web address 1); cf. Hesychius omicron488 (adduced by Bernhardy), Etymologicum Magnum 620.55 (Kallierges), and ps.-Zonaras 1438.21-5. ↩
  5. 4cf. (again) Hesychius s.v. ↩
