Translation

[Meaning] in a tavern.1 For fe/yaloi [are] sparks. Aristophanes [writes]: "the shield will be hung in the ember."2 Because of its being a time of peace. Also found is the form feya/luc in Archilochus.3 And [sc. elsewhere] in Aristophanes: "but not even an ember [feya/luc] of a seducer has been left behind."4
And elsewhere: "but half-blinded by the murky flame borne in on them and [by] the sparks, and with the smoke still very thick, not a few died."5

  2. 1'In a tavern' (kaphlei/w|) is what is transmitted, but Adler notes more plausible alternatives: kapnei/w| (Pierson), kami/nw| (Elmsley). The scholion itself -- see next note -- has e)n tw=| kapnw=|. ↩
