Translation

Those from the [Attic] deme [Phyle].1
Also [sc. attested is the participle] fulasso/menos ["being on his guard"], [meaning] exercising foresight, looking out. "he did not deviate, however, being on his guard not to seem to be running away." So Xenophon.2 Thucydides too [sc. uses the verb].3
"Having stood guard for most of the night, they fled.".4
Also [sc. attested is] I guard; [used] with an accusative.5

Notes (5)

  1. 1The transmitted headword fula/simos is untranslatable and wrong. It should be (upper-case) *fula/sioi: see Hesychius and, especially, Etymologicum Magnum s.v. For Phyle cf. phi 831, phi 835, phi 838. ↩
  2. 2Xenophon, Anabasis 2.2.16 (with the Attic form fulatto/menos), on Klearchos: web address 1. ↩
  3. 3Adler cites no reference for this, but it is perhaps 4.11.4 (fulassome/nous tw=n new=n mh\ cuntri/ywsin "being cautious for the ships, lest they wreck [them]": web address 2). ↩
  4. 4Quotation unidentifiable. ↩
