Translation

Those who say that mud is earth mixed with moisture are mistaken; for mixture [is] not the difference (species) of mud but its class (genus).

  1. An approximation of Alexander of Aphrodisias, Commentary on Aristotle's Topics 318.18-19 (on Topics 123a3); cf. 450.27-28 (on Topics 144a5), where Plato (Theaetetus 147C) is quoted as one who makes this particular error.
Adler also cites Anecdota Graeca (Cramer) 2.486.2.
For this headword, a neuter noun, see also phi 850.
