Notes (2)

  1. The headword adjective, drawn from the quotation that follows, is nominative singular masculine. It can also mean 'fostering' or 'fertile' and as such is attested as a divine epithet for Poseidon (e.g. Pausanias 2.32.8), or Zeus (e.g. Hesychius phi1067). See also phi 805.
  2. 1This first gloss is surely intended to provide etymological rather than semantic information. For fu/tlh see phi 879. ↩
  3. 2Sophocles, Oedipus at Colonus 149-50 [150-1 in some editions] (the chorus addressing Oedipus), with comments from the scholia there. ↩
