Notes (3)

  1. The early parts of this entry have parallels in other lexica.
  2. 1The headword is dative plural of pi=los (pi 1601, pi 1602). [The SOL headword, wrongly, is pi/lhma, on which see next note] It has, for practical purposes, the same glossing in other lexica: see the references at Photius pi880, where Theodoridis notes that the Suda compiler seems to have changed the glossing word from pilwtoi=s to pilhtoi=s on his own initiative. Be that as it may, pi/lois itself must be quoted from somewhere -- almost certainly Hesiod, Works and Days 542. ↩
  3. 2For pi/lhma, see pi 1385, pi 1597. ↩
  4. 3Quotation unidentifiable -- and inherently very odd: as its name suggests, a thorax (theta 439, etc.) is routinely worn round the chest, not on the head. (LSJ s.v. offers no enlightenment, but for the 'hollow' of a corslet cf. Aristophanes, Peace 1224.) One is bound to suspect that 'on their heads' is a mistake. ↩
