Translation

[*po/stos comes] from po/satos, by syncope.1 But it is also applied to quantity.2 For example, "What year is [he] living?"3 Also, "What hour of the day [is it]?"4

Notes (4)

  1. 1The gloss po/satos is attested only in grammarians, beginning with ps.-Herodian, etymologizing (as here) the interrogative adjective po/stos. But cf. pollosto/s (pi 1925, pi 1926). ↩
  2. 2cf. ps.-Ammonius, De impropriis 29. ↩
  3. 3That is, 'How old is he?' The quotation is unidentifiable, but cf. Homer, Odyssey 24.288, po/ston dh\ e)/tos e)sti/n, o(/te cei/nissas e)kei=non, 'What year is it, since you entertained him?' ↩
  4. 4Again, unidentifiable. ↩
