Notes
- The headword, which must be quoted from somewhere, is a transliteration (in the genitive singular) of Latin papilio, also spelled
papuliw/n andpapulew/n . Byzantine historians use the word.
The basic meaning of papilio is "butterfly," and it was applied to tents from their resemblance to a butterfly's wings; English "pavilion" is a derivative.
The second gloss is, according to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, "Vulgar Latin tenta (unattested)": here attested in a Greek genitive singular.
