Translation
The [word that means] offer. Cratinus [writes]: "and don't proffer [it?] to foreign cowherds."1 And Eupolis: "proffer your attention in this direction."2 And Thucydides [book] 3: "and those from the city held forth [signal-fires]."3 Likewise too u(pi/sxomai ('I undertake'), the [verb that is the same as] u(pisxnou=mai , [is used by] both the tragedians4 and Aristophanes: "I undertake to take part in this business."5

Notes (5)
- = Photius, Lexicon pi1331 Theodoridis (but here slightly expanded); identified by Wentzel and Erbse as coming from Aelius Dionysius (pi67).
The entry gathers a number of examples of verbs in which the common verbal element-ex- ('have'/'hold') is replaced by its less common reduplicated by-form-isx- . The close relationship between these words is difficult to maintain in translation. The example that serves as the headword is a present imperative, second person singular; the other examples come in other forms. - 1Cratinus fr. 286 Kock (317 K.-A.). ↩
- 2Eupolis fr. 386 Kock (381 K.-A.). ↩
- 3Thucydides 3.22.8 with a different compound of the same base verb. ↩
- 4(The equivalence
to\ u(pisxnou=mai is added by the Suda.) Adler cites no references for tragedy, but Theodoridis proffers Aeschylus, Eumenides 804. ↩ - 5Aristophanes fr. 615 Kock (626 K.-A.). ↩
