Translation

A proper name.
[Rhesios(sic) was] a general of the Byzantines, who had his residence in front of the city in a spot known as the Rhesion, now celebrated for the house of the great martyr Theodore.1
[Rhesus] came as an ally of the Trojans, camped in the plain in front of the city, and met a sad death; for during the night Diomedes [Author, Myth] and Odysseus murdered him.2

Notes (2)

  1. After the initial generic gloss, the body of the entry confusingly combines material on two different individuals, only the second of them called Rhesos.

  3. 2See generally OCD(4) s.v. Rhesus, the Thracian ally of the Trojans whose story is told in Homer, Iliad 10. ↩
