Translation
[Meaning a] thunderbolt, gleam.1
"For like a swift south wind rushing without gleaming lightning it ceases, and now that he is in his right mind he has a new pain."2 Meaning the madness does not have hold of him, but ceases, it ceases quickly like a swift south wind. As though there are signs that occur in relation to the breezes, so that they continue or swiftly stop.3 As in the comedy: "but it refrained swiftly; for in the evening he began to suffer."4

- 1cf. Synagoge sigma219; Photius, Lexicon sigma539 Theodoridis. The headword is nominative singular and may be either a generic lexical reference or a quotation from a literary source (but not from the quotation which follows here, where the Doric genitive singular occurs); perhaps Homer, Iliad 10.154 or -- as cited by Adler and Theodoridis -- 11.66 (cf. the scholia to the latter passage). See also ps.-Herodian, Epimerismi 123.5, 231.17, Hesychius sigma1778, omega458, Etymologicum Magnum 158.41-45. Contrast Apollonius Sophistes, Homeric Lexicon 144.17. ↩
- 2Sophocles, Ajax 257-9, with comments derived from the scholia thereto. ↩
- 3This idea is expressed more clearly in the scholia: when lightning occurs with a south wind, the wind will continue; when there is no lightning the wind will stop soon. ↩
