Translation

Also an infantry campaign.1
Arrian [writes]: "Sporakes, learning of the emperor's expedition that had occurred against his realm, fled."2
"With those sent out by him on the first expedition having performed in such a way, he was criticizing the child of the command."3
And elsewhere: "considering my interests of little importance they hastened the homeward expedition."4
But properly [it is] a nautical [expedition].5

Notes (5)

  1. The headword is nominative singular; it may be a generic lexical reference or it may be extracted from a literary source, but not from any of the quotations given, where the word occurs in the accusative singular, dative singular, and accusative singular respectively.
  2. 1For this gloss along with the final sentence of the entry, Adler cites the scholia to Apollonius Rhodius, Argonautica 1.704, where the headword occurs in the genitive singular, but there is only a very general similarity. ↩
  3. 2Arrian, Parthica FGrH 156 F157 (fr. 56 Roos-Wirth), drawn in Adler's view from the Excerpta of Constantine Porphyrogenitus. This quotation has already appeared at sigma 963. ↩
  4. 3Quotation (also, in Adler's opinion, from the Excerpta) unidentifiable. [DW: Adler passes no comment, but 'child' seems improbable in this context.] ↩
  5. 4Sophocles, Philoctetes 498-9. ↩
  6. 5See general note above. ↩
