Translation
The generals elected each year [sc. in classical Athens] were ten. Demosthenes in Philippics [sc. mentions them].1
"They used to have a general distinguished by his fearlessness and boldness in the face of dangers, but in other respects obscure and risen from humble beginnings and an object of suspicion in the eyes of the most reputable and an object of envy owing to his enjoying a good reputation contrary to his merits."2

Notes (2)
- The first part of this entry is abridged from Harpokration s.v.; besides Demosthenes (below) it cites Hyperides fr. 64 Jensen and the Aristotelian Athenaion Politeia.
- 1Demosthenes 4.26. ↩
- 2Quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the Excerpta Constantini Porphyrogeniti) unidentifiable. Its odd, argumentative character may or may not reflect comment on one general in particular. ↩
