[sc. Meaning] the goods on sale were of great value.1 Also [sc. attested is the cognate aorist passive infinitive] suntimhqh=nai ["to have been highly valued"].2 Demosthenes in the [speech] In reply to Dionysodoros says: "for some of them used to send off the goods into Egypt, but others would sail with the merchants, and others, staying here, used to set a high value on what was being despatched".3

Notes (3)
- 1Aorist passive, third person singular [sic: English idiom requires plural], of
suntima/w ; similarly glossed in other lexica; evidently extracted from Demosthenes 56.8 (web address 1), in a sentence following the one about to be quoted in full. ↩ - 2cf. sigma 1640. ↩
- 3Demosthenes 56.8 (web address 1). The mss text differs from the one given here: it has "from" Egypt, "with the merchandise," and - crucially - the bland "manage" (
diete/qento ) in the final clause. The aorist passive (as in the headword) occurs later in the passage. ↩
