[Meaning that] through which uncertainties are apprehended among the Sceptics; something that they refute through syllogisms.1
Also, when an assembly-meeting was going to happen [sc. in classical Athens], a signal was given -- which is why when the women in Thesmophoriazusae were planning to meet in assembly, a signal was given. Aristophanes [writes]: "for the signal of the assembly-meeting in the Thesmophor[ei]on is being shown".2

Notes (2)
- 1From Diogenes Laertius 9.96-7, summarized too drastically for comprehension (see web address 1). The argument purports to prove that
shmei=a do not exist. For the Sceptics cf. under mu 115, omicron 802, pi 3241. ↩ - 2Aristophanes, Thesmophoriaziousai 277-78 (web address 2), preceded by comment from the scholia there. (Precisely what the signal was is not clear, either from this passage or from any of the other pieces of evidence which bear upon the matter: Wasps 690, Andoc. 1.36.) ↩
