Translation

[Meaning a] tomb, receptacle.1
"You there, you blowhard and pussy-rubber, you desire and seem to long for a timely coffin."2
Also [sc. attested is] sorophgo/s ['coffin-maker']. Aristophanes [writes]: "or shall I describe his madness to the coffin-makers?"3 [Meaning] to those who make the coffins for the dead. That is, he will receive no other cure than death; and it [is] necessary for him to prepare things suitable for his burial.

Notes (3)

  1. 1= Hesychius sigma1346, Synagoge sigma160, Photius sigma420 Theodoridis. The headword is taken (Latte, Theodoridis) to be quoted from Homer, Iliad 23.91, where it occurs in this form (nominative singular). See also the scholia to Aristophanes, Plutus (Wealth) 277, where it occurs in the dative. ↩
  2. 2Aristophanes, Wasps 1364-5 (here with minor errors); in this passage the headword occurs in the genitive singular. See again at sigma 1263, tau 1209, chi 599. ↩
  3. 3Aristophanes, Clouds 846, with comments from the scholia thereto. In this passage the nominative singular secondary lemma occurs in the dative plural. ↩
