Translation

[Meaning] one who is blind. [sc. The word is formed] by [alpha-]privation of the [verb] la/ein, which is to look/see.¹
Also [sc. attested is the related noun] a)laskopih/n ["blind man's watch"]. Homer [writes]: "nor did he keep a blind man's watch".[Used] proverbially: meaning he did not keep a lookout blindly.²

Ἀλαός· ὁ τυφλός. κατὰ στέρησιν τοῦ λάειν, ὅ ἐστι βλέπειν. καὶ Ἀλαοσκοπιήν. Ὅμηρος· οὐδ' ἀλαοσκοπιὴν εἶχε. παροιμιακῶς· ἀντὶ τοῦ οὐ τυφλῶς ἐσκοπίαζεν.
