Translation

"And in the preparations for the dinners much of the public [funds] was wasted."¹ [Meaning] was squandered.
And elsewhere: "if Eurystheus had offered this challenge to Heracles, it would have wasted him."²

Ἀπετρύετο· καὶ παρὰ τὰς τῶν δείπνων παρασκευὰς τὸ πολὺ τῶν δημοσίων ἀπετρύετο. κατεδαπανᾶτο. καὶ αὖθις· εἰ τοῦτον τὸν ἆθλον προὔτεινεν Εὐρυσθεὺς Ἡρακλεῖ, σφόδρα ἂν αὐτὸν ἀπέτρυσεν.

This is part of Nicolaus of Damascus FGrH 90 F135: the historian (nu 393) is contrasting himself with the mythological Heracles, whose labors were performed for king Eurystheus (epsilon 3732); Nicolaus boastfully suggests that his own labor, a 144-book universal history, would have been too great for Heracles.
