Χύτραις ἱδρυτέον

Aristophanes [writes]: "what else, but that she must be established with cooking-pots?"¹ That is, Peace; for whenever they are going to set up altars or statues of a god, they would roast pulses and offer first-fruits of these for the things being set up, taking a portion of the early meal as thank-offerings. Aristophanes in Danaeans [writes]: "I call to witness the cooking-pots of Zeus of the Household, with which that altar was once set up [i(dru/sqh]."² Sometimes they are set up with a very lavish rite. Establishing herms and other certain statues in front of the doors, so as not to delay the dedication, to offer porridge in cooking-pots.
