[Meaning] complicatedly.¹
Agathias [writes]: "[Narses] brought the ambassadors into the arena with their hands crosswise and tightly bound behind their waist and their heads bent forward to the ground".²

Ἐναλλάγδην· συμπεπλεγμένως. Ἀγαθίας· παρήγαγε δὲ τοὺς πρέσβεις ἐς μέσον ἐναλλάγδην τὼ χεῖρε ὑπὸ τὴν ἰξὺν περιεσφιγμένους, κάτω δὲ τὸ κάρα ἐπινενευκότας.

[1] The headword is an adverb derived from the stem of the verb e)nalla/ssw ('change', 'alternate'), while the gloss is an adverb based on the perfect participle, middle/passive, of the verb sumple/kw; see epsilon 1106. In this episode during the Gothic War (535-554), the Byzantine general Narses (cf. nu 42 generally) stages a mock execution of Lucchesi hostages in 553 CE before the citizens of Luca (present-day Lucca, in Tuscany, Italy); cf.
