Translation

[Meaning] habitual concord and friendship.1
Babrius [writes]: "two mice formed an association with each other, not living in the same manner; one fed itself in a deserted field, the other in the houses of rich men."2
A hetaireia [is] also a military unit [tagma]. And [sc. also attested is] hetaireiarkhes, [meaning] the leader of the hetaireia.3

Notes (3)

  1. See LSJ at web address 1; and cf. epsilon 3270.
  2. 1Same glossing, according to Adler, in the Ambrosian Lexicon. ↩
  3. 2Babrius p.217 Crusius (fable of the town mouse and the country mouse). ↩
  4. 3This application of hetaireia is not explicitly registered in LSJ s.v., though sense I.2 there hints at it (by citing Aristotle on the Carthaginian sussi/tia tw=n e(tairiw=n, likened to the military messes of Sparta). The noun hetaireiarkhes is not attested until late antiquity. ↩
