Translation

[Meaning a place] empty of people. Sophocles [says] about Oedipus: "but if you are to rule this land, just as you control [sc. it now], better to be lord of men than of a wasteland (kenon). Neither walled town nor ship is anything if it is empty (erêmos) and no men dwell within."1

Notes (1)

  1. The headword, extracted from the quotation, is the neuter singular -- functioning as a substantive -- of this adjective (for which cf. kappa 1316, kappa 1318).
  2. 1Sophocles, Oedipus Tyrannus 54-57, with the scholia to 55. ↩
