Translation

[Meaning] new-born.1
From the [phrase] ne/on gi/nesqai ["to have been recently born"] [comes] neogi/non. And as pneu/mwn ["lung"] [is] pleu/mwn in Attic2 -- also ni/tron [is] li/tron3 -- so neogino/n [gives] neogilo/n.

Greek original · Adler’s text

Νεογιλλόν· νεογέννητον. παρὰ τὸ νέον γίνεσθαι, νεογινόν. καὶ ὡς πνεύμων, πλεύμων Ἀττικῶς, καὶ νίτρον, λίτρον, οὕτω νεογινόν, νεογιλόν.

Notes (3)

  1. On the etymology and spelling of neogillo/s or neogilo/s, see LSJ s.v. (web address 1). In the supplementary paragraph here the lexicographer proposes a rule for an alternation between n and l, but bases it on two atypical examples.
  2. 1Likewise in Photius (nu126 Theodoridis) and elsewhere. The headword, accusative singular, is perhaps extracted from Theocritus, Idylls 17.58. ↩
  3. 2cf. pi 1826. ↩
  4. 3cf. nu 435, LSJ s.v. ni/tron. ↩
