Translation

When Homer says ne/on h(bw/onta ["newly in the prime of youth"] he does not mean young in age, but in relation,1 as if recently attaining the prime of youth.

Greek original · Adler’s text

Νέον· Ὅμηρος νέον ἡβώοντα οὐ λέγει νέον κατὰ ἡλικίαν, ἀλλὰ κατὰ μεσότητα, οἷον νεωστὶ ἡβῶντα.

Notes (1)

  1. From a scholion on Homer, Iliad 9.446, where the phrase occurs (see web address 1).
  2. 1*kata\ meso/thta seems (besides philosophical and medical usages) to be applied to adjectives used adverbially, as here ne/on modifies h(bw/onta; cf. Aristonicus on Iliad 14.418 (and maybe alpha 831). ↩
