Translation

Sophocles [writes]: "how [could he not be alive?] Nothing evil has perished. But the gods treat them well, and somehow they enjoy turning back from the gates of Hades all rascally and crafty things, but the just and good they always send along [to Hades]."1

Notes (1)

  1. LSJ entry at web address 1. Compound of palin "back, again" and the verbal root trib- "rub". Used by Semonides of an obstinate donkey, "resistant to blows"; Sophocles here illustrates LSJ's sense 2.
  2. 1Sophocles, Philoctetes 446-450 (web address 2), with variation in verse 446. ↩
