Translation

It was two thousand cubits;1 for that is the distance that the ark travelled in procession, and that is how far they who were permitted to worship the tabernacle walked on the sabbath.23

Notes (3)

  1. Acts 1:12 (on the distance between the Mount of Olives and Jerusalem), with comment thereon; cf. Oecumenius, PG 118, 53d.
  2. 1For the cubit ("distance from the point of the elbow to that of the middle finger": LSJ), approx. 18 inches, see pi 1543. ↩
  3. 2On the ark of the covenant, see the Catholic Encyclopedia at web address 1. ↩
  4. 3In the Mishnah (M Sotah 5:3, ca 200 CE), Rabbi Akiva compares Numbers 35:5 "you shall measure from outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits ..." with Numbers 35:4 "one thousand cubits round about" to derive that the boundary that limits how far one may walk outside a city on the Sabbath is two thousand cubits. This distance then becomes the rule promulgated by such Jewish codifiers as Maimonides (~1135–1204) and Joseph ben Ephraim Karo (1488–1575). ↩
