Notes
- The (feminine) headword is unattested outside lexicography, though it is reckoned (e.g. LSJ s.v.) related/identical to
qui+/skh ('censer'), with the rootqu- suggesting some relation to sacrificial ritual. The gloss,ska/fh , can refer to anything that is dug out (see sigma 543), such as a bowl, a small boat or a ditch. But cf. Etymologicum Magnum 458.53, where the present headword is defined more fully as "theska/fh that holds the sacrificial offerings," and wherequ/mata ('sacrificial offerings') is almost certainly a mistake forqumia/mata ('incense'); cf. Etym.Magn. 458.52, wherequ/skos is similarly defined as a holder forqumia/mata . See also Hesychius theta963.
