Translation

[Meaning them] being saved by a wide margin.1 "Klearchos the Spartan gave orders to his troops, initially to make a slow advance, but if they came within missile-range, to run; the aim of the first order was to have them fight while physically fresh, and that of the second was to make [the enemy missiles] high-flying".2

Notes (2)

  1. 1This gloss appears to show that, in the quotation about to follow, the headword (masculine accusative plural) is construed as applying to the troops themselves; rather, it is used of the projectiles which miss them. ↩
  2. 2An approximation of Diodorus Siculus 14.23.1 (on the preliminaries to the battle of Kounaxa, 401 BCE). For Klearchos see also under alpha 1741, epsilon 2086, iota 226, xi 48, upsilon 420, omega 51. ↩
