to battle the yoke

Translation
[sc. The term comes] from those selling at a station and being at variance towards those buying. But others [sc. derive it] from the beasts of burden or oxen or horses or suchlike not working harmoniously. Hesiod [writes]: "and get two male oxen of nine years, for their strength is not feeble [...] The pair of them would not fight [in the furrow]."1 But Herodotos [says that] the phrase can be from those pairs on the ships, whenever the rowers are at variance with regard to their seats.2

- See also zeta 185. The bulk of the present entry is the same or similar in other lexica.
- 1Hesiod, Works and Days 436-9, here abridged. ↩
- 2Nothing like this is extant in Herodotus, so the name must be an error. Adler notes the suggestions 'Herodianos' (Peter Wesseling) and 'Herodoros' (Henricus Stephanus, a.k.a. Henri Étienne). ↩
- 3beta 157 (where no mention of this pillar is found, unless the elephant-statue is meant). ↩
