[Used] with an accusative.1 And trw/gw ["I gnaw on"] and [the imperative] fa/ge ["consume"] are [sc. also] construed with an accusative. I eat bread, I gnaw on a bun, consume an ox.2

Greek original · Adler’s text

Ἐσθίω· αἰτιατικῇ· τρώγω καὶ φάγε δὲ αἰτιατικῇ συντάσσονται. ἐσθίω ἄρτον, τρώγω ψωμίον, φάγε βοῦν.

Notes (2)

  1. cf. tau 1077, phi 12.
  2. 1(Lacking, Adler reports, in mss FV.) Likewise in syntactical lexica. ↩
  3. 2The first of these two-word phrases happens to occur in a work attributed to John Chrysostom, but the other two are otherwise unattested, and it hardly seems likely that they are quotations; rather, they are (somewhat superfluous) paradigmatic illustrations of the grammatical point already made. (Why the imperative fa/ge sits alongside two first-person singular indicatives can only be conjectured.) There can also be no suggestion that each of the three verbs is somehow appropriate to the food item here linked with it; for instance, Herakles 'eats' (rather than consumes) an ox in beta 417. ↩
