A sophist of Constantinople. Although under Constantine this man pretended to be an ardent Christian, under Julian he revealed himself as an unreasoning [pagan] Greek: he threw himself before the gate of the oratory and shouted 'Trample on me, the salt without flavour'.1 That is how vacuous and reckless Hecebolius was, both before and after.
