Notes
- Callimachus, Hecale fr. 235 Pfeiffer.
The adjectivekolourai=os "stump-tailed" (glossed in LSJ as identical toko/louros , on which see kappa 1952) is metaphorically extended to "truncated" (LSJ s.v.ko/louros I.2). LSJ renders this instance ofkolourai=os as "a steep, abrupt rock". Hesychius kappa3380 glosses the adjective as "truncated, most/very new".
Other lexicographers list*kolourai=os as the adjective corresponding to an obscure city called Koloura, near Priene in Asia Minor. In the scholia to Lycophron, Alexandra 1322 (where this fragment of Callimachus is preserved), the editor Scheer has capitalised the adjective, which indicates he thinks the town is meant; but the passage concerns Theseus leaving his sword under a rock near Troezen, so this is unlikely. The rock was supposed to be hollow, to accept Theseus' sword (e)/xousan koilo/thta : Plutarch, Theseus 3.7).
