Greek original · Adler’s text
Πομφολυγοπαφλάσμασιν· ἐν ταῖς δίναις τῶν ὑδάτων. πομφόλυγες γὰρ αἱ φλυκταινώδεις δῖναι. ἀπὸ τοῦ παφλάζειν. ὥσπερ πομφόλυξ ῥαγεῖσα ἀφανίζεται, οὕτω μνήμη ὑπερηφάνου ὄλλυται μετὰ θάνατον.

Notes (3)
- 1Aristophanes, Frogs 249 (where the dative plural headword occurs: web address 1), with comments derived from the scholia there. ↩
- 2cf. Etymologicum Magnum 682.14. ↩
- 3This quotation contains not the headword but one of its constituent nouns (for which see pi 2031, pi 2032). Tentatively attributed by Adler to Aelian, but now identifiable via the TLG as a probable approximation of Evagrius, De octo spiritibus malitiae PG 79.1164, or Antiochus Monachus, Pandecta scripturae sacrae 44. (The proverbial nature of the phrase does, though, leave open the possibility of yet another common or parallel source.) ↩
