Translation
"[To march up to] and to march by are different. For everyone 'marches up to [sc. the enemy]' when drawn up in such a way as to make them best for fighting; but those who are sensible 'march by' with a view to retreating in the safest possible way, not the swiftest. A necessity for passing by [sc. safely] is that the wagons be spread out and that the rest of the baggage-train, too, be for the most part extended." So says Xenophon.1
Also [sc. attested is]prosa/gein standing for to befriend, to win over.2
"He made it known through the envoys that he would approach the peoples with money and gifts, but would announce that the profits from the war be shared".2
