Translation

A place where pigs are reared.1
It is also called sufew/n.
Agathias [writes]: "if [it is] not absurd to say, the armies of the Romans had remained as if in pigsties and byres."2

Greek original · Adler’s text

Συφεός· τόπος ὅπου αἱ σύες τρέφονται. λέγεται καὶ Συφεών. Ἀγαθίας· εἰ μὴ καταγέλαστον εἰπεῖν, ὥσπερ ἐν συφεῶσι καὶ μάνδραις τὰ τῶν Ῥωμαίων μεμενήκει στρατεύματα.

Notes (2)

  1. 1Same glossing in Photius and other lexica, prompted by Circe's phrase e)/rxeo nu=n sufeo/nde in Homer, Odyssey 10.320. ↩
  2. 2A loose approximation of Agathias, Histories 5.13 (p. 180 lines 5-6). Agathias does not include ta\ tw=n *(rwmai/wn memenh/kei strateu/mata in the same clause. *ta\ tw=n *(rwmai/wn strateu/mata instead is the subject of the following sentence, and the verb memenh/kei is nowhere to be found, though the participle diamemenhko/ta is present in line 7. Accordingly, the Suda's muddled excerpt alters much of the sense of Agathias. ↩
