I shall be stuck into them as a spike and a reed

Translation
A proverb/saying.1 Reed: a type of plant, sharp at the end. So he is saying, I will pierce them like a sharp and painful reed. Since they used to hide spikes among the grapevines, so that no one might launch an attack at them and damage them easily. "[until] I be stuck into them as a spike and a reed [...] so that they no longer trample my grapevines."
"[...] and to cut out in addition the spikes, which they held up from the wood-cutting, and to smooth out the ground."2
"[...] and to cut out in addition the spikes, which they held up from the wood-cutting, and to smooth out the ground."2

Notes (2)
- (Entry part of sigma 647, Adler reports, in mss GV.) The headword phrase, repeated with more context later in the entry, is an abridgment of Aristophanes, Acharnians 230-32 (web address 1); see the scholia to that passage for similar comments. Much of the same material appears again at sigma 1813.
For 'spike' see already sigma 647. - 1Not registered as such in any of the paroemiographers. Here, as frequently elsewhere, the lexicographer calls a paroimia anything memorable in Aristophanes. ↩
- 2Quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the Excerpta Constantini Porphyrogeniti) unidentifiable. It contains the accusative plural of the first word (
sko/loy : 'spike') of the headword phrase. ↩
