Properly [a] swro/s ["heap"] is a mass gathered from small seeds, from the [verb] sw= ,1 which is sw/|zw ["I save"][meaning]2 suna/gw ["I gather together"]. So they have well said [this] from the fruits, for those who flourish are also wealthy. Aristophanes [writes]: "o you who have reported gold in words, how do you say? Tell me again. For you are revealing that he has come with a heap of money."

- Aristophanes, Plutus Wealth] 268-9, with scholion on 269. The Suda's actual headword phrase combines elements of the two lines.
On the "fallacy of the heap" (sorites) see epsilon 2766, omicron 973. - 1Philoxenos of Alexandria (phi 394) held that the Greek vocabulary was based on a core of monosyllabic verbs (see e.g. epsilon 4426); hence this may be a hypothetical form, unless it is a contraction of
sao/w orso/w (see LSJ s.v.sw/|zw ). ↩ - 2Ms G, Adler reports, supplies
kai\ "and" here. (The scholiast had given the synonym asswreu/w "I heap up".) ↩
