A festival of Artemis and of Apollo. [There is] also a month [called] Thargelion. And the pot full of seeds of the sacred mash; for they used to boil in it to the god the first-fruits of the crops which had appeared, named from heating [qe/rein] the earth [gh=], who is the same as the sun. Choruses took place in it [the festival]. And [sc. there is a saying] "a Thargelia of good things."1

Notes (1)

  1. Same entry -- apart from the final sentence -- in Photius (Lexicon theta22); similar ones in Hesychius and elsewhere. See also theta 50.
  2. 1This saying, for which cf. generically theta 60, is not in the paroemiographers. ↩
