[Meaning someone] wanting to shit.1
Aristophanes [writes]: "when some Patrokleides of you happens to be shit-wishing, he would not have let it out into his cloak, but would fly off, and farting and catching his breath he would fly back again."2 Meaning he would retire to void his bowels. It seems Patrokleides was a politically minded and learned man, but otherwise dirtied his bed linens. Therefore "shitting" (xesa=s ) is also said.3 And elsewhere Aristophanes [writes]: "let someone summon Antisthenes by any means; for that man knows what an arse-hole wants when it wants to take a shit."4 This man Antisthenes was an effeminate doctor.
"A cure of a much-shitting disease."5

- [1] The headword, presumably extracted from the first quotation given, is the masculine nominative singular, present active indicative, of the verb↩
xezhtia/w ("I want to shit"), a desiderative ofxe/zw . See Smyth §868 at web address 1.- 2Aristophanes, Birds 790-792 (web address 2). Part of this entry is taken from a scholion to line 70. See also epsilon 1759 and chi 219. ↩
- 3The masculine nominative singular, aorist active participle, of
xe/zw ("I shit"); cf. chi 183. Patrokleides is best known as the author of the amnesty decree of 405 BCE (Andocides 1.76-79). ↩- 4Aristophanes, Ecclesiazusae 366-368 (web address 3), with scholion. See also pi 2950. ↩
