[Meaning] released.1
Also [sc. attested is] pareqei/s ["let go"]: dismissed.2
Also [sc. attested is] parei/qh ["was let go"]: was released, was relaxed.3
"And he, having consorted with perils, was completely let go body-wise and was handed over to a fate of a painful death."4
Also [sc. attested is] parei/qhsan ["they were let go"], meaning they were dismissed. Josephus [writes]: "because of the multitude of the enemy they let themselves go as to their right hands."5
And elsewhere: "though they were let go from the overriding fear, they were bitterly denounced over the charges concerning the particulars."6

Notes (6)

  1. 1= Synagoge, Photius pi343 Theodoridis. The headword, evidently quoted from somewhere, is the aorist passive participle, masculine/neuter genitive singular, of pari/hmi. ↩
  2. 2= Synagoge, Photius pi342. This lemma, also extracted from somewhere, is the same participle as the primary headword but in the masculine nominative singular. ↩
  3. 3cf. Hesychius pi766 (on Homer, Iliad 23.868, according to Adler); Suda pi 587. ↩
  4. 4Quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the Excerpta Constantini Porphyrogeniti) unidentifiable. ↩
  5. 5Adler could not find this passage in Josephus, but it is in fact a faulty abridgement of Josephus, Jewish Wars 3.332, which has parei=san in place of the Suda's parei/qhsan, yielding the meaning "they let their right hands drop" (i.e. ceased their resistance). See in brief Theodoridis in his Photius edition, vol.II p.LXXXVIII. ↩
  6. 6Diodorus Siculus 31.5.3 (= Constantine Porphyrogenitus, Excerpta de legationibus 19). ↩
