Translation

[Meaning] blindness, or thick air.1
Mist [is] air made dense and not transparent, not bright.2
Homer [writes]: "the south wind spread a mist on high around the mountain."3 [The word] was coined from the placing of darkness [a)xlu\n] over the eyes [o)/mmasin].4
Aristophanes [writes]: "because of war and mist, [the things] which you do in a villainous manner may not be looked down upon."5 Meaning because of present evils constrained by war he may not expose your evil deeds.

  1. 1Same or similar entries in other lexica (references at Photius omicron284 Theodoridis), and cf. also the scholia to Homer, Iliad 1.359 (where the headword occurs: web address 1). ↩
  2. 2From the scholia to Aristophanes, Knights 803 (quoted later in the entry). ↩
  3. 3Homer, Iliad 3.10. ↩
  4. 4The author speculates that o(mi/xlh was formed as a combination of o)/mmasin and a)xlu\n because of the similarity in appearance the resulting word would have to o(mi/xlh. ↩
  5. 5Aristophanes, Knights 803 (web address 2). The text of Aristophanes reads kaqora=| sou in the active voice, with Demos as the subject. ↩
